Around the world, some 57 million children of primary school age do not have the opportunity for education. Although many developing countries have “state-sponsored education,” many cannot afford the cost of books, school uniforms, transportation, etc. In many countries, families depend on the income their children produce, therefore, no time or priority is given to education. Other compounding challenges are poorly trained teachers, unacceptable working conditions (teachers work multiple shifts per day), and a lack of schools resulting in long daily commutes to the nearest school (often unsafe travel for girls).
As followers of Jesus Christ, M4 Institute desires for all people to reach their God-given potential. Education provides a foundation for a full life.
In Nigeria, M4 Institute provides primary education to the children of a leper colony. The children of the leper colony are healthy, happy children, but live in the colony due to an infected parent who has leprosy. Without the compassion of God’s people, these children would have little chance for success.
In indigenous Guatemalan communities, many families cannot afford to send more than one child to school at a time, and only 1 in 10 students actually finish high school. Also affecting the quality of education in rural, indigenous communities is that the remote locations and low pay scales make it difficult to retain quality teachers.
According to the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report, if all students in low-income countries left school with elementary reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty.
